Implementing a content marketing strategy is the key to consistently generating organic search traffic.
In 2019, content has become more important than ever. Both B2B and consumers both have strong wants for high quality content before making a decision.
Learning some effective content marketing tactics can help you tremendously.
In this article, I am going to talk about some of the best strategies that Cody and I have learned over the past few years from our own experiences as founders of PoofNewSales and from the experiences of others.
Let’s get into it.
1. Create High Quality Content – Add Value
When it comes to blogging or creating any other type of branded content, the number one thing you need to focus on is quality.
Anyone that tells you otherwise is just lying.
I won’t dive too deep into how to make super high quality blog posts, because I already wrote about it here, but a few easy ways that you can make killer content for your audience are:
Each of these comprehensive guys above will give you plenty of helpful tips for creating the best content in your industry.
2. Be Honest & Transparent – It Builds Trust
The the next best content marketing tip I can give you in order to improve your organic traffic and your brain trust is to be honest and transparent.
According to a survey done last year by ReachSolutions, 42% of consumers said that they did not trust brands.
However, content helps to bridge this gap, with 61% of online consumers in the U.S. making purchases based off of blog recommendations.
In the B2B world, 71% of buyers visit blogs before making a purchasing decision.
Honesty and transparency with your content helps you to build a bigger and stronger audience by:
These are all the building blocks of an extremely successful content marketing strategy. People want to interact with brands that they can trust, and that actually deliver value with their content on a consistent basis.
The brands that understand this and put it into action are very successful. Just how successful? Well a study done by SlideShare revealed that 80% of consumers said authenticity of content had the highest impact on their purchasing decisions in 2018.
3. Understand Your Audience – Supply Their Demand
One of the keys to running a successful content marketing strategy is basing your content around the needs of your audience.
Without this, your marketing dollars are just a ship lost at sea.
In order to produce relevant content for your customers that will build brand awareness, trust and convert them, you need to understand these key elements about your customers:
Once you have an understanding of these basic buyer traits, you want to begin building a buyer persona.
I won’t go too deep into how to build a buyer persona in this article, because I already wrote about it here. But what you need to know is that they:
As you can see based on this list, buyer personas are extremely important to the success of your content marketing strategy.
4. Make the Your Headlines Count – Boost Clicks By 128%
You would be amazed at just how effective changing up your titles can be for boosting clicks, conversions, and increasing your rankings on Google.
At PoofNewSales, one of the first things we try to focus on helping our clients with is improving their existing pages that are already generating lots of organic traffic, by giving them a little content upgrade.
One of the first things we look to do is optimize their titles, headers, and subheaders throughout their content. This includes existing blogs as well as service and product pages, and landing pages.
Why do we do this? Well, as the title of this section suggest, it boosts your page’s performance by impressive numbers.
I want to go to into depth about how to optimize your title tags here, because I already wrote about it in this comprehensive guide.
The most important thing is that you pay attention to what good title tags have in common when you are using Google. This includes searching for your competitors, or just making regular searches on a daily basis.
5. Put Passion Into Your Content
I’m going to be completely honest with you on this one guys, the only thing that is allowed me to create daily blog content and Cody to create daily video content now for over a year straight is the fact that we are extremely passionate about what we do.
If you are a business owner, or a marketing manager who is representing your brand, you need to find a passion for what you were doing and what value you are bringing to your audience. Then you must translate your passion through your content as a representation of your brand.
This kind of goes along with the tip about authenticity, but it can be brought about in different ways. The importance is to remember where your brand came from, where you want to go, and that the only way to get there is by providing quality and authenticity to your audience.
You also want to be creating content that your audience can get involved in. This can come in the form of:
You can pick from a multitude of different formats, you just want to make sure that the one you pick helps in body the energy and the knowledge you’re trying to bring to your audience.
6. Create Content Your Audience Can Interact With
One of the largest emerging trends right now in content marketing is creating interactive content.
In fact, research by Inc revealed that 93% of marketers reported that interactive content was somewhat or very effective in 2016.
On top of that, 75% of marketers plan to increase their spending on interactive content in 2019. And 88% of B2B marketing budgets expanded their spending on interactive content in 2018 by 10-30% (DemandGen).
So, we know that marketers love interactive content, but how do consumers feel about it?
Well, I recently read a study done by Zembula, which found that interactive content generates 4-5 times more page views than static content, and also receives about 3x as many conversions.
But this isn’t just for blog and video content, deploying the power of interactive content in your email marketing strategy is also extremely effective. The same study also showed that interactive email content can improve click through rates by up to 400%
Last but not least, before you get sick of statistics, 69% of consumers also said they were more likely to buy from brands that used personalized and interactive content.
Some basic ways that you can make your content more interactive are:
7. Segment Your Audience – Make Custom Content
As custom content begins to become more and more prevalent in the marketplace, the ability to segment your audience will become increasingly more important.
Segmenting your audience allows you to provide high quality content for each one of your buyer personas.
This allows you to plan out your content far in advance, by developing around the needs common problems, questions, interests, and objections of your audience segments.
Some quick tips that can help you easily create effective audience segments are:
Segmenting your audience is not only important for producing content that is geared towards improving your organic search, but also with paid ads.
Developing a sales funnel, and guiding your various buyer personas through each of the stages of the buyer’s journey is essential to the effectiveness of your content marketing strategy.
8. Custom Landing Pages – Improve Your Conversions By 57%
Chances are, by the time you get someone on to your site who is looking to take action and make a purchase, you have either had to spend a lot of time, a lot of money, or both in order to get them there.
With that being said, I think that we can all agree that it is essential to make the most out of your landing pages.
A few content marketing tactics that you can use to improve the results of your landing pages are:
Just how effective is it to optimize your landing pages?
I recently read a study by Marketing Experiments that found that having multiple offers on your landing page can decrease conversion rates by up to 266%.
And this is just one of the dozens of deadly landing page mistakes that companies make on a regular basis.
9. Optimize Everything – Study For 10,000 Hours
Along the same lines as creating custom landing pages, you want to also be optimizing your content. This can seem like a daunting process, but in the end it is always rewarding.
The most important thing to remember about this content marketing tactic for 2019 is that you are never truly done optimizing your content.
Unless you have literally sealed the number one spot on Google for a specific page and a healthy portion of the keywords you’re trying to rank for with that page, your job is never truly done.
This is why it is absolutely essential that you make upgrading your content and repurposing your content a part of your content marketing strategy.
This can be anything from:
Overall, the best way to get access to this information is to pay attention to your Google Analytics.
I won’t dive too deep into this because I wrote a comprehensive guide about it here, but I do want to take a second to stress some key factors you should be paying attention to in order to properly optimize your content:
10. Testimonials Improve Conversions By Up To 380%
Yes, you read that header right. A study done by Power Reviews in 2016 revealed that reviews for high-priced products increase conversion rates on landing pages by 380%.
The same study also found that for low price items, this number was still a modest 190% increase in conversions.
Video testimonials have been shown to be even more effective. In fact, according to research done by Boast.io in 2017, video testimonials make website visitors 64% more likely to convert.
So, you want to begin implementing testimonials on to not just your landing pages, or service pages but also into your general content marketing strategy.
Refer to testimonials as part of your brand story. You can even utilize video testimonials and written testimonial content on social media in order to generate chairs, build brand awareness, build brand trust, and generate more website traffic.
11. Be Consistent
It’s only fitting that if we started this blog by talking about quality content that we end it speaking about consistent content.
Consistency is the second pillar love making an effective content marketing strategy. No amount of tactics will allow you to succeed if you are not maintaining consistency throughout your strategy.
This means you must:
Just to highlight the importance of consistency across all channels of content marketing, I want to share with you two very big mistakes Cody and I made in our journey with consistency.
Mistake #1: Taking A Break
Mistake #2: Expecting Our Audience to Wait Up
